Small beads of sweat collected above Nirvei’s brow. Her breathing was steady, and she listened closely to it as air was expelled from her lungs only to be replaced with more from another breath. It had been a while since she had a training session like this. Even though her uncle may have been absent due to obvious circumstances, the girl easily pictured him standing a few feet away from her as he barked orders and insisted that she wasn’t pushing herself hard enough. He may have acted more like a drill instructor than family, but training just wasn’t the same without him.
This session had started out simple enough. Nirvei already completed her usual warm ups. She had done sit ups, push ups, pull ups, and jumping jacks. One hundred of each was good enough for a start. The ten pound training weights that were wrapped around her wrists and ankles made it a bit more strenuous than usual, but it was still considered a warm up for Nirvei. Now it was time to forget about the simple exercises. The girl would have to step up her game if she wanted to see some actual results, and results were what she desperately needed right now.
If she expected to keep fighting the way that she did, Nirvei would need to make her hands more durable. She had proof of this during the whole Captain Stripe fiasco. Not one but both of her hands had been injured at some point in, and she had been seriously slowed down because of it. That would definitely have to change. Today’s focus would be physical strength over using ki.
The only question that remained was what she should start on. Nirvei looked around the spacious training room that Brokel had provided her with. It was filled with all sorts of goodies, though she had no idea what many of the devices did. A small button on the wall grabbed her attention. There was a label above it that read Dodge Ball. ‘Dodge ball? Why would one of the choices for training in here be a game of dodge ball? Is it for beginners or something?’
Allowing her curiosity to get the better of her, Nirvei pressed the small button. One of the training room’s empty walls slid away to reveal another wall. This new wall was full of holes that were about the size of Nirvei’s head, maybe even a little bigger. As the girl stared at the holes in wonder, something shot out of one of them. She didn’t have any time to think as whatever it was rocketed in her direction. She dove to the side of the object and listened as it collided with the wall behind her.
‘What was that?’ Nirvei wondered as she cautiously moved to inspect the wall. There was a pile of small rocks lying on the floor where the projectile hit. ‘So that’s what it meant by dodge ball? The wall is shooting boulders at me?!’ The girl stopped for a moment to think after dodging another large rock. This might not be a bad form of training. It definitely piqued her interest.
Nirvei readied herself and faced the wall that had been shooting at her. She didn’t know where the next rock was going to come from, but both of the rocks fired already had been aimed directly at her. There was probably some sort of targeting system being implemented here. ‘Nice to know this thing will keep me on my toes,’ she thought with a smirk.
Another rock came at her, which Nirvei sidestepped easily. It was the same story with the next few shots. ‘Wait a minute. This is good for my speed and all, but that’s not what I wanted to focus on today. I wonder...’ her thoughts trailed off. The girl drew back her fist and awaited the next rock. This idea could either be really good or end in utter disaster.
Nirvei watched it closely as the next rock sped toward he. She wasn’t moving out of the way this time. Instead she paid close attention to how fast it was going and let her fist fly mere moments before the rock would have collided with her face. The impact knocked her off balance and stung her hand. However, the rock was now a small pile of rubble at her feet. Nirvei grinned, pleased that her idea didn’t end today’s training early. This was more like it.
The time between projectiles grew shorter and shorter with each rock that was fired. As much as Nirvei wanted to meet each rock with a punch or a kick, there were points where she still had to dodge many of the rocks and allow them to crumble upon hitting the back wall.
The modified game of dodge ball concluded after a little over an hour had passed. Nirvei flopped onto the ground so that she was laying on her back. Her heart was racing, her breathing was ragged, her hands felt numb, and she was covered from head to toe in sweat and dust from destroying the rocks. Nirvei had no idea how she managed to keep going for as long as she did. She untied the training weights from her ankles and wrists without getting up and just stared at the ceiling for a few minutes, focusing on only the sound of her heavy breathing.
The girl eventually sat up, glancing about the room as she did. The original wall had slid back into place, now covering up the wall with holes that had just been shooting rocks at her. The floor was now littered with debris from each smashed projectile. Nirvei scratched her head at the sight. ‘I guess I made a bit of a mess. Oh well, I’ll tell Brokel that I’ll clean it up later,’ she told herself before climbing to her feet. With that, she left the training room in search of food and a much needed bath.
